Using the Engineering Design Process, Career Strategies students in Mrs. Smith's Drafting/CAD class built boats using straws, cups, plastic wrap, and duct tape. Students were challenged to assemble the materials so the boat would float as a minimum of passengers (1/2" standard washers) board the boat while it is in the water. All designs passed the minimum requirements!

Ellie Ruble, WCCTEC Drafting II: Mechanical student, shared her Virginia Space Coast Scholar experience with our Engineering and Drafting classes today. She highlighted the program’s academic structure, as well as insight into her summer academy experience. Ellie’s PowerPoint included pictures and a video from her week at VSCS. Design, Build, Launch. Virginia Space Coast Scholars (VSCS) is a program for High School Sophomores focusing on the science, engineering, and technology integral to current missions at NASA Wallops Flight Facility and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport. Ellie recently found out she was selected for VASTS and will begin the college credit program in December. The Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) program is an interactive on-line science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning experience, highlighted by a seven-day residential summer academy at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA.

Good afternoon, We were all heartbroken when we learned that Cameron Craig had lost his life in the line of duty as a local Firefighter. The services to honor his sacrifice will occur on Wednesday afternoon and the procession will have a tremendous impact on traffic in our community. In order to honor Cameron's ultimate sacrifice and to ensure that our buses and car traffic do not interfere with the procession, all Washington County Public Schools will dismiss 2 hours early on Wednesday, October 25. Childcare will be available at all middle and elementary schools for working families who need that service. Each school will provide individual details prior to Wednesday. Thank you for your understanding. We know you join us in loving, supporting, and praying for everyone involved. Thank you, Keith Perrigan, Ed.D. Superintendent Washington County Public Schools

On behalf of our School Board and the more than 1000 employees of WCPS, I would like to express our sympathy and support to the families of everyone affected by the recent tragedy experienced by the Abingdon Fire Department and our community. For decades, the Abingdon Fire Department has served our community with courage, integrity, and selfless sacrifice for which we are indescribably grateful. There are no words that can express our condolences to everyone involved, but please know that you will have our love, support, and prayers in the coming days, weeks, and months.
