On behalf of High Point Elementary School I would like to thank the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police for their assistance with the situation that led to High Point going on a soft lockdown for most of the school day today. They provided guidance and extra personnel to ensure our students and staff were safe. We greatly appreciate their expertise, professionalism, and collaboration.
I would also like to thank the Administration at High Point Elementary for making decisions that erred on the side of student/staff safety and for communicating the status of the situation multiple times throughout the day to our parents. We will brief the situation with administration and law enforcement tomorrow to ensure that we continue best practices and improve in the areas that need adjustments.
One of the early take aways is that we can communicate more efficiently by encouraging parents and stakeholders sign up for the Washington County App. Please visit this site (
https://www.wcs.k12.va.us/article/1203297) for more information about this app and a link to download it.
Again, thanks to everyone who helped keep our kids and staff safe, nothing we do is more important. If you have suggestions on how we can make our schools safer, please don't hesitate to share your ideas with us.

Due to forecasts of strong thunderstorms with high winds, afternoon activities/practices for Washington County Public School students will be canceled this evening.
Unless, the forecast significantly changes, we will continue to hold registration events at schools as scheduled. However, if parents are unable to attend the registration events tonight, they can contact individual schools tomorrow to make other arrangements. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and make adjustments if necessary.
