What a beautiful day of learning and leadership! 🌿✨ Our Year 2 Early Childhood Education/Teachers for Tomorrow students stepped into the role of mentors as they helped chaperone a PreK 3-year-old class on their field trip to the Blue Ridge Discovery Center. From exploring nature trails to discovering the wonders of the outdoors, it was a day full of curiosity, hands-on learning, and joyful moments. 🌼🦋 The littlest learners were busy observing, asking questions, and soaking up the beauty of nature — and our high school students were right there beside them, guiding, encouraging, and modeling what it means to be a future educator. Experiences like this bring classroom lessons to life. Watching our students lead with patience, kindness, and confidence makes me so proud. After reading Not a Stick by Antoinette Portis**, our classroom transformed into a world powered by imagination ✨ What looks like a simple stick became SO much more. Armed with playdoh and popsicle sticks, students created their own "not a stick" masterpieces — and no two were alike! From magic wands to rockets, fishing poles to animal creations, each design reflected their creativity, storytelling skills, and confidence to think beyond the obvious. The 19th Annual PAWS Campaign (Providing Animals With Support) is back! From March 1–March 31, 2026, Washington County Public Schools is proud to support the Washington County Animal Shelter through this annual community drive.

We’re collecting much-needed items to help care for animals in our community, including:
🐶🐱 Cat & dog food
🧹 Cleaning supplies (bleach & dish detergent)
🐾 Kitty litter

Donations can be dropped off at ANY Washington County school.

📢SCHEDULE UPDATE: Washington County Public Schools will implement a Remote Learning Day for Tuesday, February 24, 2026. No childcare will be provided. Because of the Remote Learning Day, the WCPS Nutrition Department will offer breakfast and lunch meals for students at four locations. Meals will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Abingdon High School, John S. Battle High School, Patrick Henry High School, and Holston High School. Any child 18 years of age or younger is eligible to receive meals and may choose one of the four listed locations for meal pick-up. Students do not need to be present for families to pick up meals.

We are very proud of these students for doing so well at their state level completion this past weekend! They competed at Virginia Tech in the Engineering College. They won the Innovation Award, and they came in 2nd place Alliance🥈overall! Great job guys!! You always make the Washington County Career & Technical Education Center proud! #WCCTEC

In honor of National School Resource Officer (SRO) Appreciation Day, we would like to thank Officer Burke and Officer Riegel for the work they do each day!

The topic for our Lunch & Learn session in February was AI Tools We Love: Show & Tell! Mrs. Julia Johnston, Ms. Katherine Litton, and Mrs. Laura Smith presented some of their favorite AI tools to use for assessment, text leveling, presentation creation, substitute plans, and remote learning activities. Mrs. Malone shared a spot-on NotebookLM podcast she generated to help her students prepare for state boards, and Mrs. Duncan discussed how she used NotebookLM to generate flashcards for her students during remote learning. This was a wonderful opportunity for us to learn from each other!

"Real World Training for a Hands-On Career:" Mr. Casey Visage from Nashville Auto-Diesel College (NADC) visited the WCCTEC to talk with students about the opportunities available to them as they each continue their journeys after high school. With 17 years of experience in the automotive industry, Mr. Visage was able to share firsthand knowledge about the skills and character traits employers are seeking. He encouraged students to make good choices today, as these choices will impact the journey ahead.

📢SCHEDULE CHANGE: Based on current road conditions and another round of winter weather predicted to start at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, Washington County Public Schools will implement a Remote Learning Day for Friday, February 6, 2026. No childcare will be provided. Forecasts look much better next week and we look forward to seeing our students when we return to school in-person.

Teachers and schools will communicate additional information and instructions related to remote learning for the day.

Meals will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Abingdon High School, John S. Battle High School, Patrick Henry High School, and Holston High School. Meals will be available from 10:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m. at Abingdon High School, John S. Battle High School, Patrick Henry High School, and Holston High School. Any child 18 years of age or younger is eligible to receive meals and may choose one of the four listed locations for meal pick-up. Students do not need to be present for families to pick up meals.

We are also monitoring the potential for snow this evening. Should a change need to be made to tomorrow’s schedule, a decision will be made by 7:30 a.m.

Families always have the final say when determining if travel is safe for their student. Schools will work with families to make up missed learning for absences related to travel concerns in the affected areas.

📢SCHEDULE CHANGE: Although air temperatures are above freezing, road temperatures are not. As a result, we are experiencing black ice all over the county. Washington County Public Schools will implement a Remote Learning Day for Wednesday, February 4, 2026. No childcare will be provided. Because of the Remote Learning Day, the WCPS Nutrition Department will offer breakfast and lunch meals for students at four locations. Meals will be available from 10:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m. at Abingdon High School, John S. Battle High School, Patrick Henry High School, and Holston High School. Any child 18 years of age or younger is eligible to receive meals and may choose one of the four listed locations for meal pick-up. Students do not need to be present for families to pick up meals.
